Carlsbad Flower Fields Reap Landmark BloomsPopular tourist attraction has seeded new ideas for 2001 CARLSBAD, Calif. (February 2001) - The billowy blooms awaken atop a sunny Pacific knoll, marking another landmark season at The Flower Fields® at Carlsbad Ranch. The 50-plus acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus, and other flowers that peak for eight weeks between early March and early May, are beginning to explode into vibrant color. The popular spot, drawing more than 150,000 visitors each spring, doubles as a robust working ranch and regional tourist attraction, a spectacular harbinger of spring in Southern California. As if this beloved attraction is not enough to stimulate the senses, The Flower Fields® has extended this year's blossoming season and scope with additional collections of impressive flowers and horticultural wonders. New for 2001 are the All-America Rose Selections Garden, Walk-of-Fame Garden, an introduction of several new demonstration gardens of Flower Fields branded perennials and The Color Project, an ambitious art-meets-nature program. Also new is a 3,000 square-foot children's gathering area for picnicking and assemblies. The focus on children kicks off with Kid's Days, April 7 & 8, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a series of special events for the younger crowd. "The Flower Fields® is a working farm, one of a few in North America that allows visitors to stroll the fields and commune with nature," says Michael Cardosa, general manager of The Flower Fields® at Carlsbad Ranch. "What we also want to create here is a broader horticultural experience where people can see all kinds of different flower species and learn how to incorporate them into their own gardens." The All-America Rose Selection (AARS) and Walk-of-Fame gardens cover more than 3,000 square-feet, and eventually will grow to 6,000 square-feet as new varieties become available from year to year. These gardens are dedicated to the introduction and promotion of exceptional roses. Since 1938, the AARS seal of approval has graced outstanding new rose varieties that have withstood the test of time - and Mother Nature. The AARS garden at the Carlsbad Ranch has more than 50 different rose varieties that are being displayed for their beauty and grace, and tested for disease resistance, color, fragrance and endurance. The Walk-of-Fame rose garden, possibly the first of its kind anywhere in the world, features each of the 173 AARS winners since 1940. Color Project premiered in spring 2000 as an ambitious program to commission nationally recognized artists to use flowers as an art medium. In its second exciting year, a color study, entitled "Circles and Cycles, A Chance Garden" by New York based painter Gary Lang, will be introduced as a work in progress. Last year's debut, Patricia Patterson's "An Enclosed Garden," offers another range of artistic expression that visitors can experience along with an introduction of new plant varieties. Other highlights this year include The Flower Fields® Theme Gardens which showcase a new line of Flower Fields branded perennials introduced through a marketing alliance between The Paul Ecke Ranch, the world's leading grower of poinsettias and annuals and Yoder Brothers, the world's leading grower of chrysanthemums and perennials. The Theme Gardens, comprised of a cottage garden, cutting garden, sun garden, shade garden and fragrance garden will feature some of the more than 300 branded alliance cultivars, including 30 to 40 bedding plant varieties. Each garden is designed to illustrate how color can be used in the home landscape. The Flower Fields® has once again partnered with Armstrong Garden Centers where visitors can shop and purchase Flower Fields brand products in its 33,000 square-foot facility located at the site. The Flower Fields® at Carlsbad Ranch will open its spring season March 3 at 10 a.m. to one hour before dusk. Cost is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3 for children 6 to 12. Admission for children 5 and younger is free.
